Sovereign Performing Arts Center

The Sovereign Center for the Performing Arts involved the complete renovation of the former Rajah Theatre in downtown Reading for the Berks County Convention Center Authority.  Burkey Construction Co. served as agency construction manager for this $7,650,000 project.

Construction included all new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, including sprinklers and air conditioning, as well as new seating and stage rigging. As a historic project, considerable detail was paid to the historic elements of Reading’s traditional public theatre.

The project was completed with minimal disruption to the seasonal performance schedules of Reading’s major community theatre and musical organizations. After an eight-month pre-construction period, construction was mostly completed in a six-month window over the summer of 2001, with completion in time for the fall season of the Reading Symphony Orchestra.

The project was funded with a combination of City of Reading Community Development Funds, BCCCA funds, and a $3.5 million community capital campaign.
